Advocate to support training of healthcare workers who work with refugees on utilizing culturally congruent care when assessing for grief

This project aims to equip healthcare workers with essential skills and knowledge to recognize, understand, and effectively address grief within various cultural contexts. By filling the existing gaps in care, this training will enable healthcare providers to engage with patients in ways that honor their cultural traditions and beliefs surrounding loss and mourning.
Pain, Anger, and Aggression: A Complex Interplay of Symptoms, Social Factors, and Behaviors

In recent years, increasing incidences of high-profile violent acts have gained national media attention highlighting anger and aggression among people with pain (Schatman et al., 2022). While these may be relatively rare events, one survey of pain management clinicians in the United States found more than 2/3 of the respondents reported a patient had threatened them physically at least once a year and 9% reported they had been physically attacked (Moman et al., 2020). Opioid management was cited most often as the clinical context of these threats (Moman et al., 2020). What underlies this phenomenon of violence within pain management is complex and unlikely to be resolved quickly or easily. Yet, there are proactive measures that can be taken to reduce safety risks for people with pain and the people who interact with them.
Workplace violence can include physical assault, threatening, or verbal abuse (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health [NIOSH], 2013). Healthcare and social service workers consistently experience higher incidence rates for nonfatal workplace violence than other private industry sectors with nurses and nursing assistants experiencing injuries most frequently (Hawkins & Ghaziri, 2022). As access to prescription opioids in the United States became increasingly restricted, one survey found that 51% of chronic pain care clinicians (N=373) reported having received threats of bodily harm and 2% were assaulted (David et al., 2015). It is believed that such incidents are underreported due to lack of institutional support and protection policies (Fawsy et al., 2023). Many pain care clinicians have reported carrying firearms to protect themselves on the job (David et al., 2015; Moman et al., 2020).
